October 19, 2009 - from Francis O'Byrne re: Hike this Weekend - It was COLD!

This hike turned into a learning experience for many scouts including the Bear Patrol. About 6 scouts did not bring GLOVES and about 4 scouts did not bring HATS. I sent out two reminder emails to everybody to make sure the scouts dressed for cold weather and to bring more than one HAT and more than one pair of GLOVES.  At the meeting last  Thursday, Russ gave a talk about winter camping and I gave a talk about HATS, GLOVES, and BOOTS. I did not talk about the importance of bringing a jacket since I thought that was an item that each scout would put on before he left his house, however I was sadly mistaken. Alex F. did not bring a jacket?

Then we have the Bear Patrol.  The Bear Patrol brought food, however they failed to bring anything to cook it in (pots,  pans etc..), or any cooking  utensils?

I hope the scouts that did not bring a hat or gloves, or  a jacket, or cooking utensils, or pots & pans   will learn from their mistakes.  It’s easy  to camp when its 70 degrees, when its 30 or 40 degrees you will never forget the items that you forgot. Patrol leaders, have a meeting, discuss what you did right as a patrol, what you did wrong, what each scout in your patrol did right or wrong  and how to fix any mistakes. It sound to me as if each patrol needs to make up their own LIST of items that need to be brought on a hike for the patrol (pots & pans etc) and for each scout (hat, gloves, jacket, etc)

There are 12 points to the Scout Law. Point # 9 is THRIFTY.  That is my specialty.  I do not spend more than a few dollars on anything that I take camping with the exception of my sleeping bag.   Talk to me at a meeting about “were do you get that for under $ 5  dollars? “ ,  and I will tell you.

Garage sales, yard sales, estate sales, thrift stores, good will stores, salvation army stores, dollar store, K-Mart, Hobo, Maxwell street, Menards, Home Depot,  etc.

Note from the Webmaster: Another GREAT source of excellent, inexpensive camping equipment is the AUCTION! Pots and pans, cooking utensils, camping gear can always be found at the AUCTION for a very reasonable price.

October 15, 2009 - from Francis O'Byrne re: Hike this Weekend

We have a hike this weekend and its going to be cold. Attached is a letter (Winter Camping Memo) I sent out a few years ago about dressing for cold hikes. Make sure you/your son is dressed properly for this hike.  They sell hats,  scarves and gloves  at the dollar store. Please go there and buy 5 or 6 hats and a few scarves and few back up camping/work gloves. It makes me CRAZY when I see a scout standing by the fire freezing  with no hat on or no gloves on with the excuse that they can’t find there hat or there one pair of gloves are wet. I tell them to put on another hat or another pair of gloves. They tell me that they only brought one hat or one pair of gloves.

PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW YOU SON TO LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT A HAT ON HIS HEAD,  A HAT (or more) IN HIS PACK, A FEW PAIR OF GLOVES ( dollar store if necessary) AND A PAIR OF BOOTS. Gym shoes are not warm and are not water proof .

September 24, 2009 - A note from the Webmaster:

Welcome to a new scout year! I am honored to be affiliated with this troop and happy to be able to support BSA Troop 979 through this website. I hope that all our current scouts, their families, scoutmasters, Troop 979 alumni, future scouts, and others find the information that I post on this site helpful and informative. If you have any questions, problems, or suggestions for content, please feel free to contact me at webmaster@troop979.org. Your input is important, and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Jim Heinlein informed me during the summer that there is a weekly cable program on Channel 406 (Outdoor Channel) at 7:30 AM on Wednesdays and 12:30 and 5:30 PM on Saturdays about Scouting. I just checked the programming guide at http://wpc.07cd.edgecastcdn.net/0007CD/programguide/ and the program is called "Scouting for Adventure". The times are listed as 8:30 AM on Wednesday and 1:30 and 6:30 on Saturday, but doesn't indicate what time zone this is for, so check your own programming guide. I haven't tuned in yet, but if any one has, please send your comments and I will post them here.

Have a wonderful scout year and I hope to see everyone soon. And remember.. the AUCTION isn't that far away!!!
