The Campfire Courier of Scout Troop 979
October 2002 - Issue No. 175

The next Troop Committee meeting will be on Wednesday, October 9, starting at 8:00 p.m. The main item on the agenda will be the selection of our Summer Camp for next year.

Our final campout for this calendar year will be to Yorkville on October 18-20. Right after this campout we will make a few changes in our Patrol Leader positions. We do NOT remove a leader because he has not done a good job, but if we have another boy who we feel could take his place and benefit from the experience of leadership, we do not hesitate to make the change. We want to give as many boys possible a chance to assume responsibility...that's what scouting is all about, isn't it?.

We now have to register for the year 2003. For the past 15 years we have kept the fee at $20.00, but the way things have been going up in price we now have no alternative but to raise registration to $30.00 for the boys and $25.00 for the leaders and committee-ladies and gentlemen. Merit badges now cost $1.65 each, and badges of rank $1.50 to $2.00, so we are spending over $10.00 on each boy just for badges, and with the fee downtown now $10.00 and increased Courier postage, etc., etc., we have no choice. (and prizes cost money too).

So this is the way it is now: $30.00 for each scout, $15.00 for each leader and committee human being. Please make our checks payable to Troop 979 - BSA - and please - please - please get them in as soon as possible. It is easier to do your tax return than fill out the registration form. Have mercy on Russ. Please. .

Itsy-Bitsy Items: Nathan Stitch, Eagle Scout and former Senior Patrol Leader (excellent!) now joins us to work with the 1st year Webelo scouts, joining Jim Broccolino and Greg Schmucker. This along with Mark Kearns and Brian Sanders who work with 2nd year Webelos should give Ken Doody a great gang - now we have to get them some boys! SO round up those 9 and 10 year old kids in your neighborhood and get them out this Thursday night..... No, I haven't forgotten about Rich Herditsky. Rich has been working with the Webelos for a good many years now, and is a big help to Ken....Delores Spread, along with her daughter Bonnie May, did a great job in bringing order out of the chaos that ran wild on the Mother's Club Shelves up in the Scout room. We managed to get them another coffin box (they now have 3). Now IF we can only get them to stay on their shelf!!!!!......Thanks to Cal Bender who made us keys so that the same key will open each of the 3 coffin boxes and the Scout Room. Our Mother's Club is on the ball.....Russ will be our next Auction Chairman (he wanted the job) and has surrounded himself with a wealth of talent, namely Kevin Houston and Dave Matos. If Russ can work it they will do all the work while he gets the credit. (They will get the blame if anything goes wrong)....Jim Broccolino wants you to know that he appreciated your support during his recent loss.....Jim is a gamer......Doug Sanders says that we will be getting a new edition of our Troop Song Book this winter, since most of the boys do not have them....but Doug says that every year....JoAnn Rapp, the principal at Gordon Tech, used to be in Russ' Sunday School Class. How time flies.

A New Troop Roster will be out as soon as we get everyone registered.

Margin notes:
Starting next month Russ will be starting a book on Scouting (among other subjects). Be nice to him, because you may be in it. Another one with no mistakes! Whee. Because of popular demand, the Courier will once again come to you monthly. Whee.
Russ took typing with Miss Damler at Carl Schurz in 1934. She tried to throw him out of the class but the principal, Mr. Slocum, wouldn't let her. Yeah.
