The Campfire Courier of Scout Troop 979
November 2004, Issue No. 194

Our Troop Committee will meet on Wednesday, November 10th at 8:00 PM. We have two important items on our agenda: (1) Our troop Good Turn when we clean up the leaves and debris around the church and (2) the failure of our troop to attract new boys and its probable consequences Everyone is welcome as always.

Our Troop Good Turn is set for November 13th, starting at 9:00 AM. We have been doing this for a long time now, and it is a big job. If everyone helps we can get done in less than 2 hours. We will have a machine that mulches the leaves (loaned to us by Steve Bujewski) and that will cut down on the bagging, but if any of you have a leaf blower it would be helpful in rounding up those little leaves which defy the rake. If you can bring a blower please let either Russ or Doug know - then we won't have to buy them. We ask you to bring your own rake (put your name or initials on it!) and we also need dads and moms to help supervise. Here is our chance to say "Thank You" to the institution which sponsors us, so give us a hand if you can.

So it is time for us to REGISTER again, for the year 2005. The fee is $30.00 for each scout and $10.00 for each adult. (Leader, committeeman and committeewoman). Please make checks payable to TROOP 979 B.S.A. If you all will cooperate like you did last year and get this money in during the next week or two, it will be much appreciated. Please make it easy on Poor Old Russ. Thanks!

Little Things That Mean a Lot: Steve Bujewski's machine makes great mulch for your garden, so if you want some, bring a plastic bin or bag so you can take some home.................Paul R. and Colin S. have each hiked ten of our 20-mile trails - they are boys who do not just do what they have to do - and will both go far in life..................For the first time in the history of our troop we did not get a single new scout into our troop..............our future does not look bright..................we are glad to report that Kevin Houston has agreed to take on the task of running our auction again next year.............if he runs it anything like last year we know it will be a big success................Jim Broccolino is driving out to Las Vegas with his wife, Shirley, and they will spend two or three weeks there winning lots of money......................We will have Citizenship in the Community merit badge sessions on Saturday, Nov. 13 and Nov. 20 - 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Scouts going for First Class need this badge. They are Ryan K., Ed K., Peter T., and Jason S. They do not have to attend these sessions, but if they don't they have to do the badge on their own.......We are looking at different cams for next summer, and right now our attention is focusing on returning to the one we went to in Colorado a few years ago. We will be discussing this with the boys who were with us then and get their thoughts on the matter.........We keep hearing from the staff up at Many Points and they do want us back in 2005......................our boys made a big hit with the folks up there..........they still talk about the great campfire that Ed K. and Doug R. put on for them......Russ does not want the boys to be tied up with a lot of merit badge work when we go to camp for just one week, so he will be offering two or three badges during the coming months to replace camp badges. The first one will be the Reading merit badge. They will read (and discuss) three books over a period of three months, one a month. The books are "The Call of The WIld" by Jack London, either "Tom Sawyer" or "Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, and finally, either "Macbeth" by Shakespeare or "The Red Badge of Courage" by Stephen Crane............The second badge being offered will be the Weather merit badge, and it will be a lot different from the badge they offered at camp. It will involve thinking rather than looking at pictures. All for Now!

AND DO NOT FORGET YOUR REGISTRATION MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
