The Campfire Courier of Scout Troop 979
Fall 2009, Issue No. 204

So here we go again with another Scout year! Our first meeting will be on Thursday, September 24.

In order to avoid confusion we will make it official. You do NOT have to wear your uniforms for this first meeting.

HOWEVER, you will be expected to wear them for the Court of Honor.

Our Court of Honor will be on Thursday, October 1st, starting at 7:30 PM. Since this is a special affair, we welcome all of our parents and friends to see the Scouts receive the badges they earned at camp and the various awards and prizes that will be given out on this night.

Ed Kowynia and Francis O'Byrne took a lot of pictures at camp and we will have a showing which you should enjoy.

Our regular meetings start at 7:00 PM and the scouts should be there at this time while their folks don't have to arrive until 7:30.

Attention: Chris L., Alex N., Brendan R., Ryan L., Robert H., David G., Grant K., and Jason M.!! Vick Stitch will be at the church on Thursday, September 17 at 7:00 PM to finish up the Emergency Preparedness merit badge.(this is one week before our regular meetings start). This is a one shot deal so if you are not there, you do not pass the badge. Don't forget your family evacuation plan.

Vic knows his catastrophes and he is tough! So be prepared.

**************************************************

Jeff P - Be there to finish the astronomy badge at the same time.

**************************************************

Our fall Campout will be on the weekend of October 16-18.

Steve Bujewski plans to hike the Rapatuck Trail sometime around the middle of November. We have not done this trail in many years, and it is a good one. Do not forget that you need 6 twenty mile hikes for the merit badge and it is always a good idea to get them while you are young. Steve will have more on this trail at an early meeting.

Little things that mean a lot: This year we have lost or are losing a lot of fine scouts who have or who are turning 18 and are leaving us. Gone are Danny S., Kenny D., Kevin K., David M, Chris M., and Tim M. Turning 18 soon are Tim H. and Andrew M. Andrew is a senior in high school and a very busy boy, but he has told us that he will stay active in the troop during the coming year.

With the loss of these older boys our "next generation" of leadership shall have to move up and continue to provide us with the excellent leadership that we have had these past several years. It is a challenge, but we are sure that they are up to it.

Jim Heinlein, who keeps up with such things, tells us that Scouting now has a weekly cable program on Channel 406 - it is on Wednesdays at 7:30 AM (Whee!) and Saturdays at 12:30 and 5:30 PM. It shows different scout camps and things that go on there.

All for now..
